As of December 24, 2025, USPS postmark rules changed. The official postmark now reflects the date mail is processed at a sorting facility—not when dropped off. As a result, returns or payments mailed on deadlines like April 15 could show a later date and risk being considered late. To avoid this, you can request a manual postmark at a retail counter, send them by certified mail, or electronic submission
As of September 30, 2025, the U.S. Treasury and IRS ceased issuing paper checks for tax refunds and other federal benefits. All refunds for the 2025 tax year (filed in early 2026) must be sent electronically (direct deposit, prepaid debit card, or digital wallet).
While the executive order mandates that all payments to the federal government must eventually be made electronically as soon as practicable, the IRS has clarified that taxpayers can still use existing payment methods, including paper checks, for their tax payments until at least 2027 or until new rules are issued.
